Objective: Substance use disorder is associated with significant deficits in cognitive functions, including memory, executive function, and processing speed, which can disrupt the treatment and rehabilitation process. This study aimed to investigate the effectiveness of a cognitive rehabilitation program on these three cognitive components in individuals with substance use disorder. Method: The present study was a quasi-experimental study with a pretest-posttest control group design and a two-month follow-up. The statistical population comprised all individuals seeking treatment at addiction treatment clinics in Rasht City, Iran, in 2025. A total of 30 participants were selected using convenience sampling and were randomly assigned to an experimental group (n=15) and a control group (n=15). The experimental group received 10 individual sessions of the Solberg and Metter (2001) cognitive rehabilitation program, while the control group received no intervention. Data were collected using the Everyday Memory Inventory (Sunderland et al., 1983), the Barkley Deficits in Executive Functioning Scale (2012), the Zahlen-Verbindungs-Test (ZVT; 1978), and the Coding Test (1995) at three stages: pretest, posttest, and follow-up. Data were analyzed using multivariate analysis of variance with repeated measures via SPSS-27. Results: The findings indicated that the cognitive rehabilitation program had a significant effect on improving memory, executive function, and processing speed in the experimental group compared to the control group (P < 0.05), and this effect remained stable at the two-month follow-up. Conclusion: Given the sustained effectiveness of the cognitive rehabilitation program in improving memory, executive function, and processing speed, it is recommended that mental health professionals and addiction treatment centers incorporate this program as part of adjunctive treatment protocols alongside standard addiction interventions. The structured exercises of this program may be utilized to reduce cognitive deficits in patients, thereby decreasing the risk of relapse.
