Objective: The present study aimed to develop a structural model by examining the mediating role of psychological capital in the relationship between basic psychological needs and addiction proneness among high school students. Method: This study was a descriptive-correlational research employing a structural equation modeling design. The statistical population of the study comprised all male high school students across three districts of Tehran during the 2024–2025 academic year, of whom 700 individuals as the study’ sample were selected using multi-stage cluster sampling. Participants completed the addiction potential scale, the psychological capital questionnaire, and the basic needs satisfaction in general scale. The statistical data were analyzed using Pearson’s correlation and structural equation modeling. Results: The findings of structural equation modelingindicated that basic psychological needs had a significant negative direct correlation with addiction proneness. Furthermore, the results of bootstrapping showed that psychological capital played a significant mediating role in the indirect relationship between basic psychological needs and addiction proneness. Conclusion: The results of the present study indicate that enhancing psychological capital can strengthen the protective effect of basic psychological needs against addictive behaviors and lead to a sustained reduction in substance use proneness among adolescents.
