Abstract
Objective: This study was conducted to examine the psychometric properties and cultural adaptation of the Persian version of the Mental Pain Tolerance Scale among individuals with opioid use disorder and those in sustained recovery. Method: The target population consisted of all individuals who were currently using opioids and those in sustained recovery in Lorestan Province in 1404 (2025). In the first study, 400 participants (200 current users and 200 individuals in sustained recovery) were selected through purposive sampling, and exploratory factor analysis was conducted. In the second study, 600 individuals (300 opioid users and 300 in sustained recovery) were selected through purposive sampling, and confirmatory factor analysis was performed. The participants completed the Mental Pain Tolerance Scale, the Hopelessness Questionnaire, the Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale, the Stages of Change and Treatment Motivation Scale, and the Mental Pain Scale. Participants completed the Mental Pain Tolerance Scale (TMPS‑10), the Beck Hopelessness Scale (BHS), the Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale (HADS), the Stages of Change Readiness and Treatment Eagerness Scale (SOCRATES), and the Mental Pain Scale (OMMP‑8). Findings: The results of the exploratory factor analysis confirmed a two-factor structure, Managing the pain and enduring the pain, for the Mental Pain Tolerance Questionnaire in both groups. These two factors explained 63.34% of the variance among individuals who use opioids and 66.93% of the total variance among individuals in sustained recovery from opioid use. Confirmatory factor analysis indicated an acceptable fit for both the single-factor model and the second-order two-factor model. Concurrent validity was supported by significant negative correlations between mental pain tolerance and depression, anxiety, hopelessness, and mental pain (p ≤ 0.05). Conclusion: The findings support the use of the TMPS‑10 for research and clinical purposes.
