Objective: The present study aimed to compare borderline personality traits and suicidal thoughts between substance-dependent individuals undergoing methadone maintenance treatment and members of Narcotics Anonymous (NA). Method: This study was causal-comparative. The statistical population of the study included all clients undergoing methadone maintenance treatment and participants in NA association in prisons of Ardabil province who had voluntarily referred to the health unit of these departments in 2024 for treatment of drug use. 40 substance-dependent individuals undergoing methadone maintenance treatment and 40 members of NA were selected using the convenience sampling method. The borderline personality inventory and the suicidal ideation scale were used to collect data. The data were analyzed by multivariate analysis of variance. Results: The mean scores of borderline personality traits and suicidal ideation in substance-dependent individuals undergoing methadone maintenance treatment were significantly higher than substance-dependent individuals in NA. Conclusion: The results of this study indicated the importance and role of membership in NA in preventing suicide and mitigating borderline personality traits. In other words, continuous attendance at NA meetings is a suitable option for preventing suicide and attenuating borderline personality traits.
