Objective: The present study aimed to investigate the mediating role of mindfulness in the relationship between the punitive parent mode and relapse tendency in recovering substance-dependent individuals. Method: This was a descriptive-correlational study using a structural equation modeling (SEM) approach. The statistical population included all male opioid users (opium, sap, and heroin) aged 20-50, residing in 30 addiction treatment centers in Golestan province in 2023. A sample size of 225 was determined by allocating a coefficient of 40 to the observed variables (five variables in the model) and accounting for the possibility of incomplete questionnaires. The sample was selected using proportional stratified random sampling. The instruments used were the relapse tendency questionnaire, the schema mode inventory, and the mindfulness questionnaire. To analyze the research model, SEM was performed using AMOS-23 software. Results: The results revealed significant relationships (p < 0.01) between the punitive parent mode, mindfulness, and relapse tendency in individuals recovering from addiction. The beta coefficients (effects) for the direct paths from the punitive parent mode and mindfulness to relapse tendency were 0.294 and -0.214, respectively. Furthermore, mindfulness significantly mediated the indirect relationship between the punitive parent mode and relapse tendency. Overall, the results indicated that the model had an appropriate fit and explained 28% of the variance in relapse tendency. Conclusion: Recovering substance-dependent individuals with a higher tendency to relapse also exhibit a higher level of the punitive parent schema mode and a lower level of mindfulness. Therefore, it is recommended that counselors and psychologists at addiction treatment centers pay special attention to these variables to help reduce the relapse tendency in recovering substance-dependent individuals.
