Objective: The present study was conducted to investigate the mediating role of personality organization in the relationship between attachment styles and addiction susceptibility among university students. Method: This study employed a descriptive-correlational design using path analysis. The statistical population comprised all female students residing in dormitories at Bu-Ali Sina University, Hamadan, during the 2022-2023 academic year. From this population, 295 participants were selected via convenience sampling and completed the attachment style questionnaire, Kernberg’s inventory of personality organization scale, and the addiction susceptibility questionnaire. Data analysis was performed using path analysis. Results: The results indicated that secure attachment had a significant negative direct effect on addiction susceptibility, whereas anxious attachment exerted a significant positive direct effect. However, avoidant attachment did not show a significant direct effect on addiction susceptibility. Both avoidant and anxious attachment styles demonstrated significant indirect effects on addiction susceptibility through the mediating role of personality organization dimensions (psychological defenses, identity diffusion, and reality testing). Conversely, secure attachment did not show a significant indirect effect on addiction susceptibility through these mediators. Conclusion: It is concluded that levels of personality organization serve as a crucial underlying mechanism linking insecure attachment styles to addiction susceptibility.
