Abstract
The purpose of the present study was to compare the effectiveness of Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT) and Mindfulness-Based Cognitive Therapy (MBCT) on attention bias and drug-induced visual cues in heroin users at the Keramat Camp in Mobarakeh County during the 2023-2024 year. This quasi-experimental research employed a pre-test, post-test, and follow-up design with a control group and a purposive sampling method, conducted according to the intended inclusion and exclusion criteria of the research method. The MBCT sessions consisted of 10 sessions, each 120 minutes long, held twice a week. Similarly, the ACT sessions consisted of 10 sessions, each 120 minutes long, held twice a week. However, the control group did not receive any specific intervention during the research period..The statistical population of the study included all heroin users in the 2023-2024 year who were admitted as residents for a 6-month period at the camp, numbering approximately 400 individuals. The sample consisted of 90 heroin users who were selected via purposive sampling and then randomly assigned to three groups of 30: one group under Acceptance and Commitment Therapy, one under Mindfulness-Based Cognitive Therapy, and a control group. These groups were assessed in three stages: pre-test, post-test, and follow-up.The research instruments were the Dot-Probe Task questionnaire for attention bias (MacLeod, 1986) and the Drug-Induced Visual Cues questionnaire (Ekhtiari, 2006). Data were analyzed using the statistical method of repeated measures ANOVA via SPSS software (version 23).The findings indicated that Acceptance and Commitment Therapy was effective on drug-induced visual cues (p < 0.01), and Mindfulness-Based Cognitive Therapy was effective on the attention bias of heroin users (p < 0.01). According to the results, it can be concluded that both Acceptance and Commitment Therapy and Mindfulness-Based Cognitive Therapy are effective treatments for the improvement of heroin users, and these therapeutic approaches can be used alongside other treatment methods.
