Predicting Substance Use Disorder Tendency based on Parent-Child Relationship Quality, Affective Control, and Emotional Processing in Adolescents

The present study aimed to predict substance use disorder tendency based on parent-child relationship quality, affective control, and emotional processing in adolescents. Method: A descriptive-correlational research design was employed. The statistical population consisted of 200 adolescents aged 14 to 18 from District 3 of Tehran, selected via convenience sampling. Data were collected using standardized questionnaires: Addiction Acceptance, Parent-Child Relationship Quality, Affective Control, and Emotional Processing. Data analysis was conducted using Pearson correlation and simultaneous regression. Results: Results indicated that substance use disorder tendency had a significant negative correlation with parent-child relationship quality, while it showed significant positive correlations with affective control and emotional processing. The combined model accounted for 28% of the variance in substance use disorder tendency, with the father-child relationship pattern exhibiting the highest predictive power. Conclusion: The findings emphasize the importance of parent-child relationship quality and emotional skills in preventing substance use disorder and highlight the necessity of designing psychological interventions for adolescents.
