Objective: This study investigated the diagnostic role of cognitive emotion regulation strategies and mentalizing ability in individuals with substance use disorder, smokers, and normal individuals. Method: This was a causal-comparative study in which a total of 246 individuals—82 in each of the three groups—were selected through convenience sampling with an age range of 20 to 60, in accordance with inclusion and exclusion criteria. Data were collected using the cognitive emotion regulation questionnaire-short form and the reflective functioning questionnaire. The data were analyzed using discriminant function analysis. Results: The results of the discriminant function, with the two variables of mentalization and cognitive emotion regulation strategies, were able to correctly classify and group 74.4% of individuals with substance use disorder, 48.8% of smokers, and 80.5% of normal individuals. Accordingly, 67.9% of all participants were correctly classified. Conclusion: The results demonstrate the role of how individuals utilize cognitive emotion regulation strategies and their level of mentalization ability as diagnostic variables in substance use disorder, and it is necessary to consider these factors in the planning of prevention and treatment for substance use disorder.
