Objective: This cross-sectional study was conducted to explore the perspectives of recovered addicts on the reasons for their participation or lack of participation in sports activities. Method: A qualitative survey research method was employed for this study. The participants consisted of members of the Narcotics Anonymous Association in Alborz Province. Using snowball sampling, 15 participants were selected for the sample. Data were collected through semi-structured interviews. The analysis of the data was conducted using a combination of thematic reflective and inductive methods with MaxQDA software version 18. Findings: Data analysis revealed three general topics, including internal motivation, external motivation, and lack of motivation along with eight subcategories, including health, self-concept, sports excitement, sensation seeking, support, priorities, and ineffectiveness. Conclusion: To increase sports participation among recovered addicts and consequently reduce relapse rates, comprehensive and structured planning by relevant authorities is necessary. This planning should focus on enhancing motivational factors such as physical health, mental well-being, physical activity, excitement in sports, a sense of purpose, and social belonging. Additionally, it should aim to eliminate existing barriers, such as priorities and inefficiencies, that lead to a lack of motivation and non-participation in sports activities.
